Saw a mattress ad where the couple sleeps through a marching band, and it made me trust the whole thing more
I usually roll my eyes at those ridiculous mattress commercials, like the one where a guy sleeps through a thunderstorm and a train and his neighbor's leaf blower all at once. Last Tuesday I was up at 4am after a night shift and saw this ad where a couple is dead asleep while a full marching band, like 40 people with tubas and snare drums, walks right through their bedroom. First thing I thought was, no way, that's the dumbest thing I've seen all week. But then I noticed the small text at the bottom that said the band was recorded live on set, no sound mixing, and they actually measured the noise levels and showed them on screen. I went down a rabbit hole reading about the shoot and found out they filmed it in a real house in Austin and the actors really did sleep through takes because they were that tired. Now I kind of respect the whole over the top approach, because at least they're not faking the one thing the ad is about. Has anyone else spotted an ad that seemed totally fake but turned out to be real?
Watching a 40 piece marching band roll through your bedroom and sleeping right through it is basically the plot of a cartoon, so of course I assumed it was fake. But then you dig in and find out the actors were dead tired and the sound was live, and now the dumbest ad on TV is somehow the most honest one. That is a weird way to earn trust, but hey, it worked on you. My favorite version of this is those car ads where they claim the stunt was real and then you find out it took 47 takes and a stunt crew, which kind of ruins it. At least a tuba is a tuba.
