Joked with my wife about wanting a butter churn, and Instagram served me 9 of them in 2 days
I said it once, out loud, in our kitchen in Boise, never typed it anywhere. Now my feed is all $40 hand crank churns from shops I never heard of. Does laughing at one ad make them come back stronger for anyone else?
This kind of thing has been going on for years and people just kind of shrug it off now. My buddy mentioned wanting to visit Iceland at a bar one time, phone face down in his pocket, and he got ads for flight deals within the week. It is not just mics either, it is location data, purchase habits, your contacts, all of it getting stitched together to guess what you might buy. The part that gets me is how fast it works when you never typed a word, which means the listening or the guessing is way better than they admit. Laughing at an ad probably does make it worse because the app sees you stop and look, so it feeds you more of the same. We traded all this for free apps and now a butter churn is haunting a guy in his own kitchen lol.
