Rant: I used to get my green chile from the same spot on Central for 15 years

They'd roast it right there in the parking lot, and you could smell it from San Mateo. Now they just sell those pre-bagged frozen ones from some factory in Texas. The change happened about two years ago when the original owners retired. I had to start asking around at the growers' markets to find a decent local roast. Anyone know a good, consistent roadside stand that's still doing it the old way?

My uncle tried to mail-order green chile once and it was a soggy tragedy.

Wait, your uncle thought mail-order green chile was a good idea? That's like expecting a snowball to survive a trip through an oven. The whole point is that fresh roasted smell and the char, @henderson.wesley. By the time it sloshes around in a box for days, you're just getting sad, steamed peppers. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Mail-order green chile is a genuine crime against food. The texture is the whole point, and you just can't ship that. Some things are not meant to leave the state.
