PSA: Found a hole-in-the-wall tamale spot off Central that nobody talks about
I was driving down Central last Tuesday and saw this little red awning I'd never noticed before near San Mateo. Pulled over and this older lady was making tamales right there in the back of her shop. I grabbed a dozen for 15 bucks and they were still steaming in the bag. The masa was way lighter than the stuff I get at the grocery store and the red chile had actual heat to it. Has anyone else stumbled on a spot like this that stays under the radar?

Hold up, you sure it wasn't just a good day and any tamale would've hit the spot? I've been burned by too many "hidden gems" that were just average on a second visit.

a good day and any tamale would've hit the spot"... wow, that's harsh lol. I mean I get being burned before, but this place was legit. The masa was so fluffy it practically melted, and the filling was like perfectly spiced shredded pork, not that dry, stringy stuff you get at most spots. I went back like three times last month and it was consistent every single visit. Not trying to fight about tamales here but I stand by this one haha.
