Just realized I've been cutting avocados completely wrong my whole life

My neighbor's 14-year-old showed me you're supposed to slice it in the hand not on the cutting board and I nearly took off a finger 3 different times before today lol has anyone else been doing this dumb method for years?

Wait, in your hand?? Like just holding it and slicing towards your palm? That sounds terrifying honestly. I'd probably end up in the ER on the first try.

I mean, 'terrifying' feels like a strong word for slicing an apple. I get it, the visual of holding it in your palm and cutting towards yourself is not my favorite thing, but people have been doing it for years without losing fingers. Yes, your hand could slip, but if you're paying attention and using a decent knife, it's really not that big of a deal. I think all these 'dangerous everyday things' warnings are just fear mongering sometimes. People act like chopping an apple is like juggling chainsaws. It's fine, just don't be an idiot about it and you'll be okay.

Does anyone else notice how the REALLY dangerous stuff in life is usually the stuff nobody warns you about? Like we all know to be careful with power tools or hot pans or whatever, but NOBODY sits you down and says "hey, by the way, never hold an apple in your palm while slicing, because that's basically an ER visit waiting to happen." @adams.spencer I tried it once and my hand went numb from just THINKING about what could go wrong. It's weird how the small everyday things can be way scarier than the big obvious dangers if you actually stop and think about them.
