Got called out by a longtime Nob Hill shop owner and it fixed how I talk about local spots
I run a small page where I highlight local places around town, mostly Central and Nob Hill, and a few months back I wrote up a new coffee spot on Central in a way that honestly came off like I was reviewing a chain. The owner of a shop that's been on Carlisle for 22 years pulled me aside at a farmers market and said, "You make it sound like you're doing us a favor by showing up." That stung because she was right, and I sat with it for a while after. I had been writing stuff like "hidden gem" and "you have to try this" without ever asking the owners what they actually wanted people to know. So I changed my whole approach, now I ask three questions before I write anything, what they make, how long they've been at it, and what people always get wrong about the place. The difference in response has been wild, one post about a tortilla spot on 4th got shared by the family that runs it and their regulars actually showed up. If you're posting about local businesses, do you ask them first or just go off your own visit? I want to hear how other folks here handle it.
